Demolition

Storm Damage Demolition in Clearwater & Tampa Bay

After a storm, demolition is part of recovery — and the difference between doing it right and doing it fast is documentation, permits and safety, all of which still apply when half the street is in the same state.

Storm work arrives in two forms. The first is structural: a building the storm has made unsafe — a collapsed roof, a compromised wall, a house the county has red-tagged — that needs to come down in a controlled way before it comes down on its own. The second is the flood gut: a structure that stands but took water, where the drywall, insulation, flooring and cabinetry have to come out fast, before mold makes a bad month worse.

Insurance runs through both, and we work with it rather than around it. Photograph everything before we touch it, keep the scope itemised, and coordinate timing with your adjuster — demolishing evidence before the carrier has seen it is the most expensive mistake in storm recovery, and we will tell you to wait if that is what protects your claim.

The rules do not wash away with the storm. Demolition permits still go through the municipality — most Tampa Bay jurisdictions run expedited emergency processes after a declared event, and we know how to use them. The asbestos survey requirement still applies, storm or no storm, and skipping it creates liability that outlasts the rebuild. Genuinely unsafe structures can proceed under emergency orders, and we work with building officials when that is the situation.

Volume is the other reality. After a major storm, haulers and landfills back up for months. Running our own transfer station and our own roll-off fleet means our capacity is ours to schedule — we are not queueing at someone else’s gate while your project waits.

Owning the transfer station changes the arithmetic on a demolition. Debris comes back to Keene Rd instead of a third-party facility, concrete and block are crushed into road base, paver base and #57 rock, and none of it passes through anyone else’s pricing on the way.

What it costs

What drives a storm damage quote

Scope of jobWhat drives the number
Flood gut, to the studsWater line height, contents, and how fast it needs doing
Partial removal of damaged sectionsWhat failed, what stays, and the shoring in between
Full demolition of a condemned structureThe same drivers as any house demolition, plus site debris
Storm debris and downed-structure haulingVolume and sorting — vegetation, C&D and metals split

Every demolition is quoted on site, free. Access, structure and what has to be protected move the number more than square footage does, which is why we walk it rather than price it down the phone.

How it works

What the job looks like

  1. Make safe and assess

The structure assessed, immediate hazards addressed, and the honest call made — controlled demolition, partial removal, or gut and dry.

  2. Document

Condition photographed and the scope itemised before work, in coordination with your adjuster.

  3. Permit

Demolition permitted through the municipality — expedited emergency routes where a declared event opens them, asbestos survey where the age requires it.

  4. Demolish or gut

Unsafe structure taken down in a controlled sequence, or wet materials stripped to the studs and hauled before mold sets in.

  5. Clear and secure

Debris out through our own yard, and the site graded or the structure left dry, secure and ready for the rebuild.

What a quote covers

Included

  • Pre-work photographic documentation and an itemised scope
  • Coordination with your insurance adjuster’s timeline
  • Emergency or standard demolition permit through the municipality
  • Controlled demolition with sorted hauling
  • Site graded, or structure left dry and secured

What changes the number

  • Adjuster inspection before demolition — protecting the claim comes first
  • Red-tag and unsafe-structure orders, which change the permit route
  • Pre-1981 structures still require the asbestos survey after a storm
  • Substantial-damage determinations decide whether it comes down at all — we work to that finding
  • FEMA and local debris programmes, which sometimes cover part of the hauling

Questions

Storm Damage Demolition FAQs

Should I demolish before or after the insurance adjuster visits?

After, in almost every case — the carrier needs to see the damage, and demolishing first can undermine the claim. The exception is a genuinely unsafe structure under an emergency order, and we help document either way.

Does insurance pay for demolition?

Where the damage is covered, demolition and debris removal are normally part of the claim. We provide the itemised scope and photographs your adjuster needs to approve it.

How fast can a flooded house be gutted?

Days, not weeks — a typical flood gut to the studs takes two to four days, and speed matters because mold establishes within about that window in Florida heat.

Do I still need a permit after a hurricane?

Yes. Most Tampa Bay jurisdictions open expedited emergency permitting after a declared storm, but the permit still exists, and the structure still needs an asbestos survey. We handle both.

My house is red-tagged — what happens now?

A red tag means the building official considers it unsafe to occupy, not necessarily that it must be demolished. We assess it honestly, and where demolition is the answer we work with the official on the fastest safe route.

Can you handle the volume after a major storm?

Better than most — we run our own trucks, our own roll-off containers and our own transfer station, so our capacity is not queued behind everyone else’s at a landfill gate.
