Asphalt Removal in Clearwater & Tampa Bay
Asphalt comes out fast and cheap compared with concrete — the real decision is what happens to the base underneath, because that is what your new surface will live on.
An asphalt surface is a wearing course a few inches thick over a base that does the structural work. Removal is quick: the mat is broken or peeled with an excavator, loaded, and hauled. What matters is the condition of what is underneath. If the base is sound, the cheapest good outcome is to remove the asphalt, regrade the existing base, and pave straight onto it. If the base has failed — the alligator cracking and potholes that made you call us usually say so — it comes out too, and new base goes in.
This is where our operation is unusually well matched to the job. The replacement base is crushed concrete road base from our own transfer station — a widely specified, well-draining base material that we produce ourselves at the Keene Rd yard. Old surface out, new base in, compacted, one contractor.
Old asphalt is recyclable and we handle it as a clean stream, not mixed C&D. Parking lot work adds the site realities: striping and signage removal, protecting drainage structures and valve boxes in the surface, phasing so a business keeps its entrance open, and utility locates before anything digs below the mat.
For businesses we typically work in phases or off-hours so the lot never fully closes. For homeowners, a driveway is usually out in a morning.
Most demolition contractors pay a gate rate by the ton at a facility they do not own, add to it, and pass it on. Ours is the gate: the C&D transfer station on Keene Rd is ours, the concrete and block come back to be crushed, and the disposal line on the quote is what it actually costs.

What it costs
What drives a asphalt removal quote
| Scope of job | What drives the number |
|---|---|
| Residential driveway | Area, thickness, and whether the base stays |
| Parking lot removal | Total area, haul distance, and phasing around an open business |
| Base excavation and replacement | Depth of failed base and new base quantity |
| Curb, wheel stops and striping removal | Linear footage and what the replacement layout keeps |
Every demolition is quoted on site, free. Access, structure and what has to be protected move the number more than square footage does, which is why we walk it rather than price it down the phone.
How it works
What the job looks like
Assess the base
Failure pattern read from the surface, base condition checked, and the remove-or-keep decision made honestly.
Locate and protect
Utility locates run, and drainage structures, valve boxes and edges that stay are marked and protected.
Remove the mat
Asphalt broken or peeled, loaded, and hauled as a clean recyclable stream.
Base work
Existing base regraded and compacted, or excavated and replaced with crushed concrete base from our yard.
Hand over to paving
Grades checked and the site left ready for your paving contractor — or for pavers or concrete if the surface is changing.
What a quote covers
Included
- Base assessment and a straight recommendation
- Utility locates and protection of surface structures
- Asphalt removal and recycling as a clean stream
- Base regrade and compaction, or replacement with our own crushed base
- Site handed over to grade for the new surface
What changes the number
- Base condition — the real variable hiding under every asphalt quote
- Drainage: removal is the moment to fix the ponding, not repeat it
- Phasing and access for businesses that stay open
- Depth of asphalt at patched and overlaid areas, which can be double the original
- What the new surface is — asphalt, concrete and pavers want different base prep
Questions
Asphalt Removal FAQs
How much does asphalt removal cost?
Asphalt is the cheapest paving to remove per square foot — it peels up fast and mills clean. Area is the main driver, and whether the base underneath has failed is the real question: sound base stays and costs nothing extra, failed base has to come out and be rebuilt, which adds real money. We check the base condition during the free site look so the quote settles that before work starts.
Can you keep the existing base?
If it is sound, yes — and that is the cheapest good outcome. We check it after the mat comes off and tell you honestly which parts hold and which do not.
Is old asphalt recycled?
Yes. Asphalt is one of the most recycled materials in construction, and we haul it as a clean stream rather than mixing it into C&D loads.
Can you remove a parking lot while the business stays open?
Yes — we phase the work so an entrance and parking stay available, and off-hours work is on the table where the schedule needs it.
Do you supply the new base?
Yes — crushed concrete road base produced at our own transfer station, delivered, placed and compacted on the same job.
How long does a driveway take?
Most residential asphalt driveways are out in half a day, with base work finishing the same day.
